For the 13th consecutive year, the Cypress Ridge girls’ wrestling team has taken the district championship, and this year went on to take first place in the statewide UIL competition. Two of the boys’ wrestling team members took fifth and sixth place at state. The winnings have been revered as a great achievement, with a pep rally held on Friday, Feb 27 in congratulations of not only wrestling but all state competitors, over sports and academic.

Senior Edward Valdez is tied for highest placing boys’ wrestling team individual placement at fifth place.

“My favorite part about wrestling is winning,” Valdez said. “Just to know you beat the other guy, that you put more work in.”

Senior Michael Dean placed 6th in the State Championship. At the District meet [pictured], the Cy-Ridge boys wrestled hard and pulled off a 2nd place team score with a total of 11 boys placing in the top six. Seven of the guys placed in the top four, moving on to regional championship. The JV team had nine guys place in the top six, and the team placed 4th overall.

Vahan Surabian, assistant wrestling coach for the boys’ and girls’ varsity and junior varsity teams, is very proud with the results for this season.

“From the start of the year to the end of the year they’ve improved, and then our girls’ team overcoming the adversity to take state and getting two boys to place, one of them placing fifth, which ties us with our highest placing boy in the history of our school,” Surabian said. “I’m proud of how our kids have grown and developed and I’m proud of the way they ended the year.”

Page Baynes placed second at the State Championships. At the District meet [pictured] the Cy-Ridge Girls pulled out a dominating victory, taking 1st place overall winning districts for the 13th year in a row. Paige Baynes, runner up individually at state for the second year in a row and the school’s highest placing female wrestler, mostly describes wrestling as tiring.

“But fun at the same time,” Baynes said. “Being with the team and stuff, laughing with the team. We have a great bond.”

The girls’ team is also the first championship in Division 6A history.
