On Saturday, Feb. 21, the Cypress Ridge art department took 16 students to compete in the Visual Arts Scholastic Event at Seven Lakes High School. Cy-Ridge took home a large number of top scores.

“We competed against Katy, Spring Branch, Alief, Cleveland, and others and all the Cy-Fair schools.  Some students took two projects some took only one.  These were some of their best work,” Jaimie Ladysh, art team leader, said.

Projects were ranked and given a score of I to IV.  A rating IV is the mark of a superior, exemplary, work of art. Each student is in a division that matches how many years of art they have had in high school.  One piece is chosen from each discipline in each division.

Tara Campbell received fours on both of her photographs. Campbell chose her submissions because she felt they were really unique and had a strong change of doing well.

“And in this one right here, this one is probably my favorite piece that I’ve done this year because I love anything rustic that has a story behind it,” Campbell said, pointing to her project. “And you know, the horseshoe and the cross, religion [is] very important to me so this is kind of like, a self-portrait through a still life and it really tells the viewer a lot about me; just through a picture.”

Viet Tran received a rating of three last year but scored a four this year. She chose her sister as the subject of her photography.

“My favorite picture would be the girl flower dress on the wall of vines,” Tran said. “So it’s basically my aspect of how man and nature interact with each other. But like, I was inspired by another artist so I made this because she made a dress out of bees, so now I decided to make a dress out of flowers to see how it turned out, and it turned out pretty cool.”

Student work can be found in the glass case located by the auditorium. The state competition will be in Dallas on April 24-25, 2015.
