The Competition of Cupcake Creations

In the battle of cupcakes… who wins?

Senior culinary student Patrick Billete won the “best frosting” in a district cupcake battle on Jan. 19 with his Bacon and Chocolate frosting. Billette was surprised that he had won in that category since his frosting was considered out of the ordinary, the frosting consisted of bacon which people do not often find with their dessert, especially on a cupcake.

“I was very happy for myself, and I was glad I won a prize,” Billette said. Billette and his fellow classmates all made cupcakes during school in culinary class and the culinary teacher, Krista Saur, chooses a few students with the tastiest cupcake to attend the cupcake battle.

Being one of the few that were chosen only made him work harder and think of what flavor to use for his cupcake recipe.

“I practiced on the weekend and night before to bring to cupcake battle,” Billette said. Billette feels good about his win because he has chosen to be a cook as his career. Not only does Billette want to be a pastry chef but his fellow classmate Lanica Steele, wants to be a chef as well.

Senior Lanica Steele was also one of the five that were selected to attend the cupcake battle. Although Steele did not place in the event, the battle was still interesting and caught her attention.

“My first flavor didn’t work out, and we did a spice cake in class which I ended up liking, and I like Snickerdoodle, so I just combined the two flavors,  and made the cupcake,” Steele said.

Steele was pretty excited she got chosen to be in this event, especially since she wants to be a cook or baker in the future.

“I really like to cook and bake, and wanted to learn, I thought it would be a good experience to test my skills,” Steele said.

Overall, the competition went well for the students and they have to  come to the realization that it takes plenty of practice and dedication to be in the baking business.

“I would put more time for myself to prepare and perfect my skills to get better,” Steele said.
