Ashley Gonzales, senior, softball player, signed her letter of intent to play softball at Alvin Community College on Jan 17, 2018.

“I chose to play for Alvin because I loved where it was located and everything it had to offer to me,” Gonzales said.

Gonzales was to originally sign her contract before friends, family, teachers, and teammates in the Principal’s Conference room, however it had to be postponed to a mock signing on the 24th due to in-climate weather prompting district-wide school closures on the 16th and 17th.

“I was super excited because I knew that I had made the right decision by choosing Alvin,” Gonzales said after her signing celebration.

Gonzales has been playing softball for the past 13 years since she was five years old.

“I like the competition in softball and how no matter what may be going on in my life I can always count on softball to get me through it and provide a relief to me,” Gonzales said.

Chelsea Cabrera, sophomore, also plays softball like Gonzales.

“I may not be on the same team as her, but I think the opportunity she had was amazing, and I am really happy for her,” Cabrera said.

Opportunities like this can change a teenager’s life, especially if playing sports in college is that athlete’s dream.

“If I would have had the opportunity Ashley had, I would have definitely taken it. Having to play softball for a college would be like a dream come true,” Cabrera said.
