Culinary 1 students Seleste Richards, Athziri Cerda, Allan Sevilla, Alondra Ruvio (culinary II student at Cy-Fair), Lauren Greer, Chef instructor Krista Sauer, and Nathalie Lagunas display their creation from the cupcake competition.

Students from the Culinary 1 class competed in the 1st Annual Cy Fair ISD High School Cupcake Battle at the Berry Center on Friday, October 28th against all the Culinary 1 programs district wide. Cypress Ranch took the most wins.

Due to the high interest of students wanting to compete, culinary teacher, Krista Sauer held her own campus Cupcake battle within her Culinary 1 to select a finalist. Students brought cupcakes for administration and teachers to try and score; the top six from the battle went on to compete in district.

For the district competition, students created 12 cupcakes, nine of which were displayed and three for judges to taste. The students were scored on the frosting texture, cake texture and display. Before the award ceremony students were able to taste other competitors food. Winners won a variety of products from KitchenAid.

At the competition, senior Nathalie Lagunas placed 5th overall and 1st for “Best Frosting”. Although Lagunas placed, her success in the kitchen has not ended there.

“I was really nervous and surprised that I actually did win something,” Lagunas said. “I joined culinary for a better experience because I already cook at home, so I already know how it goes, and I just want to learn more ingredients and learn things to make for my family.”

Senior Seleste Richards, who was one of the six competitors, agrees on the success of the competition and sees this as a  learning experience.

“Competition was pretty great,” Richards said. “It was nice seeing other people’s cupcakes and displays. It was also nice seeing how many people loved my display and cupcakes.”

This is Sauer’s first year as the culinary teacher. Sauer admits to being disappointed in losing due to the students working hard on their displays, and although they did lose overall, Lagunas did take 5th place which made the students and Sauer very proud.

“I feel like teaching culinary is a skill you could use regardless of what you do in life,” Sauer said. “Everybody eats, its in everything, life revolves around food and so being able to teach them something applicable to that is so much fun.”
