Student Profile: Brandon Lim

His true dedication to being a musician

Lizeth Gonzalez, Business Manager

Senior Brandon Lim has participated in region band’s since his freshmen year because of due to his dedication to music. Over the pas few years, Lim has attended Solo & Ensemble, Texas Music Education Association (TMEA) and has placed second in the Houston Symphony League Concerto Competition.

Lim always knew he wanted to do something with music and as a young kid he was hooked into the life of a drummer. Lim’s exposure to the music videos of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers inspired him to become the accomplished musician he is today.

“When I was around four or five I would always watch, off a DVD, these Tom Petty music videos and I guess watching him play, watching the drummer play in that group was what made me want to be a drummer first and percussionist later and I thought, I remember watching those music videos and I thought that, Stan Lynch really to me made drumming seem like the coolest thing you could do cause it just seemed like such a fun kinda thing to learn and a fun thing to do for a living,” Lim said.

Being exposed to the life of a musician enhanced his interest in being a percussionist.  Although he didn’t know how to play the guitar Lim knew what he wanted to do in life, even if he didn’t realize it at the time.

Although Lim has won and participated in many competitions his end goal was never to win solely for the medal.

“Nothing quite motivates me to necessarily place at contest, I just have such an ingrained love for music that it just makes me want to work hard at it so I can perfect it and I try to overlook the competition aspect of it and I try to practice mainly more so I can better myself a musician” Lim said.

Band Director Armando Robledo has seen Lim grow into an accomplished musician throughout his senior year.

“Even though Brandon is a very talented person, he’s really humble, and that’s what impresses me more about him because he’s a good player, he’s one of the best in Texas, but he doesn’t walk around or act with a big ego even though he’s so talented” Robledo said.

Lim has worked hard with a wide variety of band directors throughout his high school years and each one has affected him as a musician.

“All the directors that I’ve been able to work with, what’s nice is that they all come from different backgrounds and you know some of course have different ways of teaching, directing, and this, and that, but it’s good and beneficial for me as a student musician to be able to work with such a diverse group of directors and conductors and I feel especially lucky to work with our directors” Lim said.

Lim hopes to continue in his musical career after graduating and become one with his musicianship.

“I’m hoping with all the experience I’ve gained it will help me in the real world when I go off to college and apply for jobs, all the things I’ve done is kinda of, in a way, preparing me for what it will be like in the real world” Lim said.

Lim has placed and accomplished a lot since he became a musician and he hopes to continue his love for music.
