Kids vs Technology
May 5, 2015
Parents these days are pretty tech savvy. But when their children whine, they melt and give up their coveted cell phones and tablets. These babes need a distraction. We are in the 21st century and not just any old toy does the trick anymore. So, parents turn to the one thing that is sure to keep the kids busy – technology. But how young is too young for an iPhone? Five years, six? Or maybe even nine? Is it right for kids to know how to use a tablet before they can even walk?
With all of these modern distractions, it is no wonder kids are running around crying because their new iPhone 6 is running low on battery.
Most people, though, remember the days when it was not odd to spot a kid on his bike, or a girl playing with her dolls on the sidewalk. These days, it’s pretty rare.
Cy-Ridge counselor Carolyn Harrell recommends children play with toys instead of technology.
“Anything that requires the use of imagination, dress up clothes, Barbie dolls, and action figures for boys are great,” Harrell said.
Some well-known celebrities, and even late Apple Co-founder, Steve Jobs denied the use of technology to his children.
“I think it is okay for kids to use technology, for games, for a short amount of time… It should be restricted, supervised, and only used in a limited basis,” Harrell said.
There are many reasons parents say yes or no to this topic. One of which is the educational aspects that technology offers.
So, what do you think? Should parents let their kiddos run free and burn off all of that excess energy, play with their toys and get a healthy tan instead of inside exercising their thumbs for that new high score?
